Day 30: The Backpack & Wine Flies Wine Tour

October 4th, 2012

So DAY 30, we never thought it would come so soon but it has :(. We definitely celebrated, HARD with Wine Flies Wine Tours today!

Wine Flies Wine Tour

I know, sorry for the day late post but when you have been drinking wine from 9:00am – 9:00pm it definitely takes a toll on your body, not to mention the quality of my writing! My blog post yesterday would have been more scrambled than my eggs this morning with some obsessive words about the Wine Flies Wine Tour and how amazing it was.

We woke up, showered and dressed (in our best backpacking clothes) for our BIG day. For those of you who don’t know me, I LOVE wine.

The bus was packed today filled with English, Swiss, More Canadians, some Kiwis and Australians! A great combo for the days wine festivities! Our tour guide Lawrence took us to 5 different wineries today (8:30am – 5:00pm) for a full day of drinking.

All of the wineries were gorgeous, I wish I was coherent enough to take notes but the closest I got to notes was the names of the wineries such as Beyerskloof, Fairview, Villiera and Annandale. Fairview was a hit for me, wine and cheese tasting! Yum! I ended up buying 2 packs of cheese at the end and eating a whole pack before we got back to the hostel.

Annandale was also neat being able to try the Chalbert wine which is in limited stock as a royal wine from many different wedding celebrations. I couldn’t walk away without purchasing a bottle (which for us was VERY cheap for such an amazing wine).

We also had the pleasure of meeting the winery owner, Gerhard Du Toit – World class South African Rugby player as a front row strong man for South Africa’s Springbok National rugby team.

No doubt I got his signature on my now famous bottle of Chalbert ;)!

All I can say about this tour is that if you love, or even like wine…. You NEED to go on a Wine Flies Wine Tour! I’m saying, if you are not planning on visiting Cape Town or Stellenbosch, you HAVE to change your plans just for this wine tour, an incredible experience. Give me a day or two to recover and I would go on the tour all over again!

At The Backpack we had another wine tasting! Luck has been on my side lately – on the first Thursday of every month Wine Flies Wine Tours holds a free wine tasting at the bar of The Backpack! With a group of about 50 people, we spent hours longer taking part in the wine tasting and had an incredible day!
