Day 33: The Backpack & Cycling Cape Town

October 7th, 2012

Well, tomorrows the day neither of us having been waiting for, home time. It’s been a wild ride through South Africa and we’ve definitely lived it to the fullest!

SouthAfrica-43

We woke up bright and early this morning for one last excursion with Cape Town City Cycle Tours. A 4 hour bike tour that I can finally say was a breeze! I can also finally recommend this tour to backpackers and travellers of all ages! It’s a relaxing city cycle tour with no hills, no obstacles, just beautiful scenery and lots of fun facts!

We visited a ton of different historical buildings and sites including:

  • The Auwal Masjid (established in 1794)
  • The Company’s Garden
  • National Library of South Africa
  • City Hall (where Mandela presented the freedom speech)
  • The presidents house
  • The slave house
  • Nobel Square
  • Cape Town Stadium
  • V&A Waterfront

Cycling Cape Town is something that I recommend everyone taking part in.

A. Because it’s not exhausting, I promise you it’s an easy ride.

B. Because you can’t learn nearly as much about past and present Cape Town in one day without biking through the entire city with such a knowledgable guide (Thanks Alex!) Once our tour came to an end we walked along Somerset Drive expecting everything to be closed (like it was in George when we decided to live homeless for a couple hours). To our surprise we stumbled upon Cape Quarter, an indoor plaza which runs Farmers Markets every Sunday until 3:00pm!

The YUMMIEST food from not only South Africa but places from across the world. I had an avo & cheese gourmet sandwich (I think I have eaten more avocado here than I have in my entire life, OBSESSED!) and Alicia had some seasoned fish with squash, creamed spinach and rice.

What a better way to spend our Canadian Thanksgiving?!

We created our own South African Thanksgiving, just the two of us in Cape Quarter. Happy Thanksgiving To All Our Friends And Family Back Home In Canada!!
