So if you’ve read my previous blog post welcoming you to the world of glamping, or if you’ve been following our adventures using the hashtag #GoGlampIreland, you may be aware that we ventured across the south coast of Ireland for a true Irish glamping escape.

Starting in Dublin and heading south through the Wicklow Mountains, the town of Kilkenny and the city of Waterford, we eventually made way to the south point of Ireland arriving safely in Drimoleague. Home to one of the best camping grounds I’ve ever seen – Top of the Rock Pod Pairc – and one of the most natural parts of Ireland’s beautiful rugged landscape.

What are Pods?

Pods are small little bungalows situated in the middle of the wilderness and scattered around the property similar to tents – but more glamorous. Our pod was simple yet miraculous. It was a small little wooden arched bunkie, which fits 2-3 people equipped with warm beds, a small heater and electricity running throughout.

Why Top of the Rock Pod Pairc?

The idea to host travellers far and wide in a remote green oasis is phenomenal on its own. However, when you mix this luxurious wilderness experience with the comfort of true and lovely Irish folk, it makes for the adventure of a lifetime.

I could tell you all about the grounds of the Pod Pairc, but photos do better justice than I can explain in words. Instead, I’d like to share with you the real reason why I’ll be coming back again soon.

The owners of Top of the Rock Pod Pairc, David and Elizabeth, are some of the most genuine and kind-hearted people I have ever met. They were welcoming, helpful and so loving – even to strangers coming in. Though we were only there for just a night, we felt welcome and at home as soon as we arrived. We met the family, the pup and the animals on the farm while learning all about how life on the farm is day-to-day.

No matter how long I stay in any given place, nothing helps me really experience the destination more than interacting with local people and becoming accustom to their local culture. To learn about all the ties within their business to the local people, it was truly an inspiring way of life.

From the breakfast and fresh dairy products that are freshly made on their families farm next door, to the fresh leftover organic food from the market that their father brings over for the donkey and lamb, Top of the Rock Pod Pairc really is the definition of sustainable travel.

Warm, welcoming, local and green.
