Yes, I am going to talk about vaginas today and no, I don’t think it’s weird!

I can’t tell you how many comments I get on a regular basis from people teasing me about how weird it is that I post about female ‘items’ on my travel blog. It’s not that I’m obsessed with menstruation, but the simple fact that being a girl is a pain in the ass and there ARE products out there that will save other travellers like it has myself.

All the Questions and Answers You Want to Know

I’m answering these questions because I know how I responded to my first conversation about menstrual cups. I had a million in one questions and the biggest reason for my hesitance to purchase was simply because it was different. I wasn’t use to sticking something that shape up inside my woman parts and I didn’t like the idea of ‘getting messy’. So let me help you out here:

1. Does it hurt?
   No, it doesn’t hurt. I get it, it is much bigger than a tampon when you compare the two. However, the Sckoon Cup is a flexible silicone cup that is easily rolled and/or folded into place.
2. Will it ‘pop my cherry’? 
   Once rolled or folded into place, it is a similar size to a tampon. If you’ve used a tampon before, I am sure you won’t feel any difference using a menstrual cup (well, you’ll be much more comfortable). So to answer this question, I mean… hey, it’s happened before and it all depends on your body’s framework however, it is very easily compared to a tampon. Chances are this will not happen.
3. Will it leak? 
   If you haven’t leaked with a pad or tampon before, you’re definitely not going to leak using a menstrual cup. If anything, the menstrual cup is a solution to those who experience leakage from a tampon. These magical things hold up to 12 hours of bodily fluids!
4. Do I have to stick my fingers up there?
   Yes, I’m not going to lie… when I first started using a menstrual cup it was a little different. I wasn’t use to being THAT familiar with my body. To be honest, it becomes normal and it really is worth it. I’ve learned so much more about my own body using the menstrual cup and some even come with measurements so you can really get to understand your flow.
5. So, how does it REALLY work? 
   Similar to a tampon, you are inserting it up into your vagina. With the tip facing down, you squeeze/fold/bend the silicone cup into a ‘U’ shape and insert. If it is easier for you to sit, I would encourage this the first few times. It really isn’t much different than wearing a tampon.
6. Does it bend? or do you just insert it as is?
   Yes it bends, don’t worry about inserting something hard… it’s a soft silicone material. Without the use of a tampon your body is able to naturally produce vaginal liquids for easy insertion. Don’t worry about drying up like you would with a tampon, this is the most natural and effective method out today!
7. What if I’ve had a baby? Or perhaps you’re just wide set 
   There’s more than one size! Most brands will have a size 1 and a size 2. Size one is for those who haven’t gone through a child birth. Size 2 is for post child bearing.
8. Can I have sex on this thing? 
   No. Just like a tampon, you would not want to have sex while the menstrual cup is inside of you. Though I would just avoid sexual intercourse during your entire cycle… that is your prerogative.
9. Can it get lost or stuck in there? 
   No. It cannot get lost or stuck. If for some reason you had managed to break the silicone nub at the end, you can simply flex your pelvic muscle and the cup will come to the surface. It’s really nothing to worry about.
10. Is it healthy? 
    YES! If you’re looking to help save the planet or just help save yourself, the menstrual cup is an eco friendly and healthy alternative to pads and tampons. You have a decreased chance of getting rashes, infections, diseases and TSS.
