For those of you who have been following my journey during the last month or so, you might know that my man and I have finally found an apartment together located in Dusseldorf, Germany. Though we were aiming for a move-in date of October 1st (the day after I come back from a month long journey abroad)… it ended up coming one month early! I’m currently sitting in a McDonald’s as I type up this post and waiting patiently for my train to take me to the Cologne Bonn Airport en route to Dublin, Ireland!

I would like to pay a little tribute to one of the world’s most loved/hated chain fast food restaurants and for some wonderful reasons.

Free Wifi

No matter where I am in the world, McDonald’s typically hold the same standards including free wifi. Since we’re new in the apartment complex, we currently have no internet. McDonald’s has been my saviour. I’m not sure if it is all over Germany, but I find unlike Canada, it’s not easy to find a cafe where they will let you sit for hours on end doing your work near a plug. I’ve been here for two hours and no one has even glanced twice at me.

Common Standards

I’ve been to many countries both developed and under developed and find that no matter where I go the standards of McDonald’s are relatively similar. While heading to the peaks of Machu Picchu or exploring the busy regions of Bangalore, India, I’ve always walked into the McDonald’s to find a modern atmosphere, classic food and working bathrooms.

Affordable Food

Sure, I write about sustainable travel and from time to time I might write about organic food or supporting local communities – I still fully believe this to be true and would recommend thinking twice about what companies you’re supporting. However, when you’ve been in 36 hours transit from one side of the world to the other, there’s no denying that seeing a McDonald’s sign is somewhat of a comfort. An egg McMuffin and a peppermint tea is relatively standard for me now a days. Though I still prefer to support local shops, I’m a human being… I need to eat.

Co-working Spaces

Whether it is catching up with a friend or heading for a meeting, McDonald’s is one of those places you’ll never have to double check to see if it’s appropriate for a meet up. I’m not a financial consultant, I’m a travel blogger.. so the scenery isn’t too much to be concerned about. McDonald’s has affordable food, a washroom and free internet – all I need for a meeting.

Well I’m about 30 minutes away from departure now so it’s time to sign off! Expect some more wonderful updates during my #GoGlampIreland adventure and if you don’t know what it’s all about, it’s time to get updated on my previous blog post now:
